Sumant Krishnan, MD

Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon

The son of an orthopedic surgeon and an obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Butch Krishnan graduated summa cum laude from Rice University, where he completed musical training with national honors in piano and vocal performance. He earned his MD degree from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Krishnan completed an orthopedic residency at the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. During his chief residency year, he was the first American fellow in shoulder and elbow surgery under Professor Pascal Boileau in France. Following this training, Dr. Krishnan was awarded a prestigious fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic and Sports Medicine Foundation in Vail, Colorado.

Dr. Krishnan joined The Carrell Clinic in 2001 and his special interest is arthroscopy, reconstructive, and replacement surgery of the shoulder. Dr. Krishnan has published scientific papers, technique articles, and book chapters, and has lectured extensively on shoulder problems ranging from total shoulder replacement and shoulder fractures to rotator cuff repair and shoulder instability. He has written a textbook, The Shoulder and The Overhead Athlete, dedicated to the care of shoulder injuries in throwing athletes. He is a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) society and in 2005 was the exchange Traveling Fellow of the American and European shoulder and elbow societies. He is a consultant reviewer for The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The American Journal of Sports Medicine, and Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy.

In 2004 Dr. Krishnan founded the nonprofit Shoulder and Elbow Research Foundation at the Carrell Clinic and is the Director of its Shoulder Fellowship. The Foundation promotes and supports research that allows the latest and most up-to-date treatments for shoulder and elbow injuries. It operates under a charter as a nonprofit Texas Corporation. Through the charitable donations received each year, the Foundation funds the ASES-accredited Fellowship training of board-eligible orthopaedic surgeons in the subspecialty of shoulder and elbow surgery. Dr. Krishnan also co-founded and runs the Shoulder Service at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, and he is the Visiting Professor of Shoulder Surgery at the International Orthopaedic and Traumatological Institute in Arezzo, Italy.

Dr. Krishnan is a Clinical Assistant Professor at UT Southwestern and at Baylor University Medical Center. He maintains active privileges at Baylor University Medical Center, North Central Surgical Center, and Texas Scottish Rite.
