Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Stephen Curtis, MD was reared in Houston, Texas. He came to Dallas as a Southern Methodist University student, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1965. He completed his medical school training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. One of the top five graduates in his class, he completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Parkland Hospital. After serving as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, he became interested in Orthopaedic Surgery. Following a two-year tour of duty, he completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. In 1975, he became a Paul Harrington Fellow in scoliosis surgery at Houston’s Texas Institute of Rehabilitation and Research. He was the last person to complete a fellowship under Dr. Harrington, a world-renowned pioneer in the use of steel rods to correct scoliosis deformity.
Dr. Curtis, who joined the Carrell Clinic in 1976, has a special interest in spinal disorders and scoliosis. He has published and presented numerous articles relating to spinal deformity and treatment. Dr. Curtis is affiliated with Scottish Rite Hospital, Parkland Clinic, Baylor University Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas and he is Associate Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Married and the father of two children, Dr. Curtis’s hobbies include reading and writing.
