Robert Vandermeer, MD (Retired)

Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon

Known for his expertise in the treatment of knee injuries, Robert D. Vandermeer, MD served 14 years as the team physician for the Dallas Cowboys Football Club until he retired from that job in the year 2000. He received his medical degree in 1958 from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. Earning election to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, he completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas. Board certified and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, he has a special interest in sports-related injuries, arthroscopic surgery, and reconstructive knee and shoulder surgery.

Dr. Vandermeer is a charter member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association. He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the National Football League Team Physician Society. In 1981, he was elected an honorary member of the National Athletic Trainer Association.

Associated with the Carrell Clinic his entire professional career, Dr. Vandermeer has written and presented papers on sports injuries and treatment at numerous medical meetings. He is a clinical associate professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas and a member of the teaching staff at Baylor University Medical Center. He has served as an orthopaedic consultant to the Southern Methodist University Athletic Department for 25 years and former assistant team orthopaedic surgeon for the Dallas Stars Hockey Team.

Married and the father of four, Dr. Vandermeer serves on the Executive Board of the Southwestern Diabetic Foundation, which sponsors Camp Sweeney summer camp for diabetic children. When time allows, he enjoys fishing, hunting, and traveling.
